Fears loom for Cambodians in the path of a controversial canal

Prek Takeo (Cambodia) (AFP) – For thousands of Cambodians, the economic uplift promised by the $1.7 billion Funan Techo canal counts for little in the face of potential displacement. Many who live in the project’s path stand to lose their homes with little notice and, as yet, little government assurance that compensation will be paid. Lim Tong Eng is one of those worrying that he’ll be left without a home and lacking in money to buy land and build a replacement.

Japan and Pacific islands oppose ‘attempts to change status quo by force’, says Kishida

Tokyo (AFP) – Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expresses concern over “unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force” in the Asia-Pacific region. The comments come during the 10th PALM summit in Tokyo, attended by 18 Pacific island state leaders. Neither Kishida nor a joint statement issued after the summit make explicit reference to China, but the language used is often employed by the US and its allies to reference Beijing’s growing hold and military capacity in the region.
