Uranium mining town in Kyrgyzstan battles Soviet-era radioactive waste

Min-Kush (AFP) – With the nuclear disposal work entering its final stages, Min-Kush, a town in central Kyrgyzstan, hopes to move on soon from its radioactive past. Three decades on from Soviet independence, Kyrgyzstan is still dealing with the consequences of the nuclear arms race in the Cold War, when Central Asia provided the Soviet Union with all of its uranium. “We have good ideas for turning the village into a tourist base,” says Ilgiz Ernis, the town’s deputy mayor.

Paris (AFP) – Every day from Paris, Radio Erena broadcasts to the Eritrean diaspora but also directly to the inhabitants of this country in the Horn of Africa, a veritable information black hole. However, due to a lack of funding, the dissident radio station is threatened with closure after 15 years of existence. “It’s a collective mission, a mission of hope, we wanted to hear the voice of the public,” says the station’s editor-in-chief, Amanuel Ghimai Bhata.

Dutch foreign minister promises Israeli counterpart ‘full investigation’ on Amsterdam violence

Amsterdam (AFP) – “A full investigation will take place in the Netherlands on the question if the Dutch authorities, if we, as Dutch authorities, acted properly,” says Dutch foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp while meeting his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar in Amsterdam. Saar’s visit comes a few days after violent clashes erupted in Amsterdam following a match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax.
