Cetinje (Montenegro) (AFP) – Thousands of people gather in the town of Cetinje in Montenegro, as well as in the capital Podgorica, to remember the victims of a mass shooting on New Years Day, and to demand accountability from the authorities.

Clean-up operation launched on beaches of the Black Sea following oil spill

Russia (AFP) – Emergency workers clean up the beaches of the Black Sea in southern Russia following an oil spill which occured on December 15. Russia’s Delfa centre, which rescues and provides rehabilitation for dolphins, says it had recorded 61 dead cetaceans since the incident, 32 of whom “most likely” died due to the spill.

Physical and psychological wounds in Mayotte after Cyclone Chido

Mamoudzou (AFP) – Nurses and psychologists continue to treat ill children in the informal settlement of Cavani Sud in eastern Mayotte after the devastation of Cyclone Chido. Emergency shelters have been closing to allow for the return to school, which Mamoudzou’s mayor wants to happen as normal on 20 January.

Snow turns English village into winter wonderland

West Burton (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Heavy overnight snow turns the Yorkshire Dales village of West Burton and it’s waterfalls into a winter wonderland. An amber weather warning — the second most serious — for snow and freezing rain is in place for much of Wales, central England and parts of northwestern England.

Colombia’s ‘living pictures’ tradition joins UNESCO tangible heritage list

Galeras (Colombia) (AFP) – The Colombian tradition of ‘living pictures’, in which the participants recreate motionless artistic scenes for hours as though frozen in time, returns to the streets of Galeras as is tradition every January. ‘Living pictures’ was declared intangible culture heritage by UNESCO in December.

Gazans mourn loved ones after Israeli air strike on refugee camp

Maghazi refugee camp (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Palestinians inspect the damage at the site of an Israeli strike on the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza. “This is an act of revenge against civilians, as you can see, children, elderly and women,” says Mohammed Abu Labda, whose brother was killed in the strike. Hamas’s 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 45,658 people in Gaza, the majority of them civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry which the United Nations considers reliable.

Volunteers clean up Bali’s beach from monsoon-driven plastic pollution

Kedonganan (Indonesia) (AFP) – Hundreds of volunteers take part in a cleanup operation on Kedonganan beach in Bali, Indonesia, as monsoon rains brought what the founder of the environmental organisation Sungai Watch, Gary Bencheghib, describes as “the worst” waves of plastic waste to hit its tourist hotspot beaches.

Disaster-hit Chilean botanical garden sows seeds of fire resistance

Viña del Mar (Chile) (AFP) – After a wildfire devastated Chile’s largest botanical garden, the century-old park rebuilds with trees it hopes are less likely to go up in flames. The wildfire of February 2024, considered the deadliest in Chile’s recent history, killed 136 people and destroyed 90 percent of the 990-acre garden in the coastal city of Vina del Mar.
