Colombians pray for senator Miguel Uribe as he undergoes emergency brain surgery

Bogotá (AFP) – Colombians pray at an altar erected in honour of senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe outside the clinic where he is currently undergoing emergency surgery for “acute intracerebral bleeding”, according to the medical team. The 39-year-old conservative senator was shot twice in the head and once in the leg while giving a speech in a park on June 7 in western Bogota. IMAGES

‘Mass grave’ excavation to start at site of Irish mother and baby home

Tuam (Ireland) (AFP) – A quiet, walled patch of grass in the middle of an Irish housing estate is set to reveal the latest disturbing chapter in Ireland’s “mother and baby” home scandal. In the town of Tuam, 135 miles (220 kilometres) west of Dublin, significant quantities of human remains have been identified. Excavation crews are set to seal off the site before beginning the search for remains in July. Women pregnant outside of wedlock were siloed in the so-called ‘mother and baby’ homes by society, the state and the Catholic church, with some 56,000 unmarried women and 57,000 children passing through them, according to state-backed enquiries.

German court jails Syrian ‘torture’ doctor for life

Frankfurt (Germany) (AFP) – Syrian doctor Alaa Mousa arrives at a German court in Frankfurt, before being handed a life sentence for crimes against humanity for torturing detainees at military hospitals under former ruler Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted from power in December 2024. Mousa was accused of torturing patients at military hospitals in Damascus and Homs on 18 occasions between 2011 and 2012. In one instance, Mousa was said to have set fire to the genitals of a teenage boy and in another case, to have delivered a lethal injection to a detainee who resisted a beating.

Iran urges IAEA to condemn Israeli strikes on nuclear sites at urgent meeting

Vienna (AFP) – Iran’s ambassador to the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency, Reza Najafi, urges the IAEA to condemn Israeli attacks on nuclear sites in the Islamic republic at an emergency meeting in Vienna. The strikes have targeted several of Iran’s nuclear facilities, as Israel claims Tehran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons — an accusation it denies. Iran says it is scrapping planned nuclear talks with the United States following the bombardments.

‘Panic and anxiety’ as Iranian missile hits Israeli coastal city of Haifa

Haifa (Israel) (AFP) – Cleanup efforts begin in Haifa, one of several Israeli cities hit by Iranian missiles overnight, as Israel strikes deep inside the Islamic republic. Israel’s military says it has destroyed one third of Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launchers, as strikes between the two arch foes enter a fourth day.

Tourists break crystal-covered work of art displayed in Italian museum

Verona (Italy) (AFP) – Two tourists are captured on CCTV footage breaking a crystal-covered chair displayed at an art museum in Verona and then fleeing once the damage became apparent. The “Van Gogh” chair by artist Nicola Bolla was described by the Palazzo Maffei museum as “extremely fragile” and covered in “a myriad of Swarovski crystal.”

Hundreds protest against mass tourism in Barcelona

Barcelona (AFP) – Protesters take to the streets of Barcelona to demonstrate against mass tourism, firing water pistols at tourists and putting stickers and cordon tape on hostels. Around 600 people protested to demand a limit on tourism, according to the Barcelona police force.
