Israel has said it intends to capture the city, which it describes as one of the last strongholds of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, whose October 2023 attack sparked the Gaza war. As of late August, the UN estimated that around one million people were living in the city and its surrounding areas, where it has declared a famine it blamed on Israeli aid restrictions. Gaza’s civil defence agency says at least 38 people have been killed since dawn on 14 September in Israeli strikes around the territory.

Valencia (AFP) – Venezuelan civilians learn how to shoot at a military barracks, as President Nicolas Maduro urges Venezuelans to join the civilian militia, which is linked to the armed forces, to help defend the country against what he considers a threat from the United States. Tensions between the two countries have soared in recent weeks after Washington ordered the biggest naval buildup in the Caribbean in years to target drug cartels. Venezuela has since hit out at the US for allegedly seizing a fishing boat for eight hours in its exclusive economic zone.

His supporters also hold a candlelit vigil in Morristown, Arizona. Kirk, who rallied his millions of followers to help President Donald Trump win a second White House term, was both revered and reviled for his pro-gun, anti-abortion and anti-immigrant rhetoric. Kirk’s murder has been condemned by both sides of the political aisle.
