Ecuadorian army drops fake cash from the sky to encourage reporting criminals

Guayaquil (Ecuador) (AFP) – A military helicopter in Ecuador drops hundreds of fake bills over the violence-stricken city of Guayaquil, each bearing a government phone number aimed at encouraging citizens to report criminals. The fake bills resemble $100 notes and feature red lettering with the messages: “Rewards for information” and “Call 131 toll-free.”

‘I can’t believe I came out alive’: Lone India plane crash survivor recalls miracle escape

Ahmedabad (AFP) – The only passenger to have survived the Air India plane crash says he can’t believe he’s still alive. Speaking from a hospital bed in Ahemdabad, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen, tells national broadcaster DD News how the plane’s door broke and there was enough space for him to get out. Ramesh, who was reportedly seated in seat 11A, is the only one of 242 people aboard the London-bound flight to have survived, with at least 24 others killed on the ground.

Iranians rally in Tehran to protest Israeli attack

Teheran (AFP) – Iranians take to the streets in Tehran to denounce Israel’s wave of strikes that hit about 100 targets including nuclear facilities and killed senior figures, among them the armed forces chief and top nuclear scientists. “We are ready [for war] and it is naive to think that we will not pay a price in this war. We will definitely pay a heavy price… but we are ready for that”, says a protester.

Albania’s women silk makers weave big dreams for ancient trade

Dajc (AFP) – Women in Albania’s northern Zadrima region keep the ancient local trade of silk weaving alive, mastering every stage of production from raising the silkworms to weaving the precious fabric. The history of silk making in Albania stretches back to the 10th century, but in recent years massive emigration and competition from synthetic fibres nearly killed the local trade. “in Zadrima, we say that raising silkworms requires as much dedication and love as raising children,” says the workshop’s co-founder Franceska Pjetraj.

‘Bodies fully burnt’: Eyewitnesses recall horror at India plane crash site

Ahmedabad (AFP) – Eyewitnesses describe their experiences after a London-bound passenger plane ploughed into a residential area of India’s Ahmedabad city, killing at least 265 people on board and on the ground. “Bodies were fully burnt. Some didn’t have a leg, or forehead. It was all totally burnt. It was like coal,” eyewitness Bharat M Solanki recalls.

Ahmedabad (India) (AFP) – Air India CEO Campbell Wilson was seen visiting at the crash site in Ahmedabad on Friday morning, after a London-bound passenger jet crashed into a residential area. At least 265 people on board and on the ground were killed when the Air India 787-8 Dreamliner smashed into a residential area soon after takeoff on Thursday. Colombians continue to pray for recovery of shot presidential hopeful Uribe

Bogotá (AFP) – Colombians pray outside the clinic where Miguel Uribe, a senator and presidential hopeful who was shot in the head while campaigning in Bogota, is currently hospitalized. An altar has been erected in front of the clinic’s bay windows, where people have been lighting candles or leaving messages and flowers over the past few days. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, makes a brief public appearance to greet people from inside the clinic in the Colombian capital. Uribe is showing signs of improvement but remains in critical condition, doctors said in their latest report on Wednesday June 12. IMAGES
