UK ‘working urgently’ with Indian counterparts following plane crash: Lammy

London (AFP) – Britain’s Foreign Minister David Lammy says the government is “working urgently with local authorities” to support those affected by a London-bound passenger plane that has crashed in India’s western city of Ahmedabad. The plane was carrying 242 passengers, of which 53 are British. Lammy announces that the Foreign Office has established a crisis team in the British and Indian capitals to support those affected by the crash.

But it is now being eaten away by one of the world’s largest nickel mining projects, as Indonesia seeks to exploit the area’s vast reserves of the metal used in everything from electric vehicles to stainless steel.

Huge plume of smoke rises after London-bound plane crashes in India

Ahmedabad (India) (AFP) – Footage shows a huge plume of smoke rising from where a plane crashed near Ahmedabad Airport in India. 242 passengers were on board the Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, that was bound for London’s Gatwick airport, India’s civil aviation authority has confirmed.

Chinese man defies demolition orders to build madcap rural home

Xingyi (China) (AFP) – Surrounded by the rubble of demolished homes, Chen Tianming has transformed his parent’s stone bungalow into a local spectacle. Authorities razed most of Chen Tianming’s village in Guizhou province in 2018 to build a lucrative tourist resort in a region known for its rice paddies and mountain landscapes. Chen refused to leave and, after the project faltered, defied a flurry of demolition notices to build his family’s home higher and higher.

Cochabamba (Bolivie) (AFP) – Police launch tear gas and supporters of Evo Morales throw dynamite and stones in a clash along a road near Bolivia’s Cochabamba, after President Luis Arce ordered police and military forces to break up a blockade on a vital road connecting western Bolivia with the centre of the country, 10 days after protests began by farmers loyal to Morales. Migrant camp in Paris evacuated by police

Paris (AFP) – Dozens of tents lined the banks of the Canal Saint-Denis in northern Paris, until French police carried out the evacuation of the makeshift migrant camp. Young migrants seeking to have their minority status recognised packed their few belongings into garbage bags marked with the Paris city logo early in the morning.

Demonstrations against immigration raids spring up across the US following LA unrest

Brookhaven (United States) (AFP) – Demonstrators gather in Brookhaven, a Hispanic suburb of Atlanta, and New York City to protest recent immigration raids and deportations carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Similar demonstrations have also sprung up in Chicago, San Francisco and Austin, after initially beginning in Los Angeles on 6 June. President Donald Trump has ordered 4,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, along with 700 Marines, in what he has claimed is a necessary escalation to take back control — despite the insistence of local law enforcement that they could handle matters.

‘No clothes, nothing’: Survivors describe chaos after Russian strike on Kharkiv

Kharkiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – People work to clear the destruction after 17 Russian Shahed drones struck two districts of Kharkiv overnight, according to local mayor Ihor Terekhov, killing three people and wounding at least 60. Two rounds of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have failed to yield a breakthrough in ending the war. Moscow has rejected calls for an unconditional ceasefire and demanded that Ukraine give up large swathes of territory and its bid to join NATO.

Northern Irish town hit by second night of unrest

Ballymena (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Violence flares for a second night in a Northern Irish town after what police have called “racially motivated” attacks, sparked by the arrest of two teenagers accused of the attempted rape of a young girl. Five people have been arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour while a sixth was detained on suspicion of disorderly behaviour in Newtownabbey, a town 30 kilometres away, one of four other places including Belfast where protests erupted.
