‘Ridiculous’: Los Angeles residents react to National Guard deployment

Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) – Los Angeles residents respond to President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to the city, where protesters clashed with security forces during a weekend of unrest over federal immigration raids. “I think Trump deploying the National Guard is ridiculous,” says Estrella Corral, while Robert Ruvalcaba questions why similar action wasn’t taken during the January 6 Capitol riots in 2021.

Climate change raises risk of Indian farmer suicides

Beed (India) (AFP) – Her voice breaking as she talks, Mirabai Khindkar recalls her husband Amol’s suicide. The farmer swallowed poison last year after scorching heat destroyed his crops, leaving him with massive debts to loan sharks. Amol was among thousands of Indian farmers to take their own lives in the last couple of years, with the country’s already volatile agriculture sector becoming even more erratic as a result of climate change-induced extreme weather.

Israel intercepts Gaza-bound aid boat

At sea (AFP) – Israeli forces have boarded a Gaza-bound aid boat, preventing the activists on board from reaching the blockaded Palestinian territory. Run by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Madleen set sail on 1 June, carrying a small amount of aid, with the aim of raising awareness of food shortages in Gaza. Israel is facing mounting international pressure to allow more supplies into the territory, described by the UN as the “hungriest place on Earth.”

Portugal’s Mendes credits Ronaldo ‘winning mentality’ in Nations League triumph

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – The UEFA Nations League final was “a duel”, says Portugal defender Nuno Mendes, following his side’s victory on penalties over Spain. Portugal twice fell behind and twice levelled to take the tie to a shootout and claim the country’s second Nations League title. Mendes credits Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo’s “winning mentality” after the 40-year-old scored the second equaliser.

Freed prisoners of war returned as part of major Ukraine-Russia exchange deal

Undisclosed (Ukraine) (AFP) – Images shared by Ukrainian and Russian authorities show freed prisoners of war returning home during the first stage of a major prisoner swap. The exchange was agreed at talks in Istanbul in early June, the only concrete agreement reached in the discussions. The deal will see the return of captured soldiers as well as the repatriation of bodies of fighters killed in the three-year war.

Police guard Bogota clinic where Colombian presidential contender is hospitalized

Bogotá (AFP) – Police officers guard the entrance to the Fundacion Santa Fe clinic, in Bogota, where Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe is hospitalized after being shot. Thirty-nine-year-old Senator Miguel Uribe has successfully undergone initial surgery, according to authorities. He was speaking to supporters in the capital when a gunman shot him twice in the head and once in the knee before being detained. A security guard managed to detain the suspected attacker, a minor who is believed to be 15 years old. Uribe was airlifted to hospital in “critical condition” and underwent a “neurosurgical” and “peripheral vascular procedure,” the Santa Fe Clinic in Bogota confirmed. IMAGES

In Tunisia’s arid south, camel milk offers hope of economic gain

El Hamma (Tunisia) (AFP) – Deep in Tunisia’s desert south, camels stride toward humming milking machines. Their milk is at the heart of a women-led project promising an economic lifeline for disadvantaged communities. Spearheading this effort is 32-year-old Latifa Frifita, who launched Tunisia’s first, and so far only, camel milk pasteurisation unit two years ago in Medenine. Containing up to five times more iron than cow’s milk, camel milk is non-alergenic and some studies have suggested that it has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties.

110 stuffed lizards to be used for medical treatment seized in Peru

Arequipa (Peru) (AFP) – Peruvian authorities seized 110 stuffed lizards that were to be used illegally for traditional medicine treatments in southern Peru, the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (Serfor) says. The lizards were preserved in glass jars with alcohol and were being sold illegally as alternative treatments to herbal remedies.
