Cambodia deputy PM says Trump should get Nobel Peace Prize

Phnom Penh (AFP) – Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol calls Donald Trump the “President of Peace” and says that he should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, after the US president intervened to help broker a ceasefire in their deadly border conflict with Thailand. The two countries agreed a truce on 29 July following five days of clashes that killed at least 43 people on both sides.

Sandstorm turns skies orange in Peru

Ica (Peru) (AFP) – Skies in Ica, southern Peru, turn dusty and orange during a sandstorm, after the country’s meteorology service issued a warning of winds with speeds of up to 40 km per hour. Strong winds from a South Pacific anticyclone triggered a massive sand and dust storm in the south of Peru.

At least seven people have died in Conakry due to heavy overnight rain, the government said on 31 July.

Chilean copper mine entrance after collapse leaves one dead, five missing

Trump says Canada must ‘pay a fair rate’ after hiking Canadian tariffs

Washington (AFP) – US President Donald Trump says Canada must “pay a fair rate” after raising tariffs on certain Canadian goods from 25 percent to 35 percent. He had warned of trade consequences for Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September.

Would-be Israeli settlers march on Gaza

Israel-Gaza Border (Israel) (AFP) – Within sight of Gaza, the devastated Palestinian enclave ravaged by nearly 22 months of war, hundreds of Israeli settlers march to stake their claim on the battered territory. Waving Israeli flags alongside the orange banners of Gush Katif — a bloc of settlements dismantled in 2005 — the marchers make their way from the town of Sderot to the Asaf Siboni observation point, overlooking the ruins of Beit Hanun. The would-be settlers say they have been in talks with hardline members of the ruling coalition and believe there may be a political opening, despite the fact that reoccupation is deemed illegal under international law.

Al-Zawayda (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Gazans scramble for airdropped aid in the central Zawayda area, as international pressure mounts on Israel to agree a ceasefire and allow the world to flood Gaza with food. “Hunger has driven people to turn on one another like this… this [current approach of aid airdropping] is nonsense,” says one Palestinian.
