Californian honey bees await the state’s famous sunshine

Pasadena (United States) (AFP) – California’s very wet winter gifted the state a spectacular superbloom — an explosion of flowers that should have been great news for bees. But keeper Jay Weiss says lingering low temperatures and uncharacteristically grey skies are keeping the insects indoors, and if it doesn’t get sunny soon, the bumper honey harvest keepers were hoping for might not materialise.

Funeral held for victims of deadly attack in northern Nigeria

Raka (Nigeria) (AFP) – In Nigeria’s village of Raka Dutse, a mass funeral is held for the 30 victims of a violent attack that took place on June 3rd and 4th. Six villages were raided by armed men in the country’s north, regularly hit by criminal violence and clashes between communities over grazing and water rights.

Kakhovka dam was blown up by Russia says Ukrainian President Zelensky

Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accuses Russia of mining and blowing up the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine, denying Russian claims that it was destroyed by Ukrainian shelling as “physically impossible”. The partial destruction of the strategically important dam has flooded a small city, two dozen villages and forced the evacuation of hundreds.

In Ecuador biosphere, battle lines form over mining plans

Pichincha Province (Ecuador) (AFP) – The Choco Andino Biosphere Reserve near Ecuador’s capital Quito is a UN-designated biodiversity hotspot and the center of an increasingly heated debate over mining. Mining companies want to exploit sites within the sprawling reserve, home to species like the spectacled bear. At least 12 mining concessions are in exploratory stages, although no mine has yet opened.

Severe flooding hits Northern Ecuador

Esmeraldas (Ecuador) (AFP) – More than 500 residents were evacuated from their homes in the northern Ecuadorean province of Esmeraldas, which borders Colombia, as heavy rain caused six rivers to overflow.
