The death toll has risen to at least 62, officials said Sunday. “For Hurricane Ian it was largely the helicopter operations that were hoisting people out of this harmful hazardous destroyed area that we’ve seen over the last several days, so our job during Ian has been to spot those people, locate those people and then get an asset helicopter on the scene and hoist those people out,” says Lt Commander of Coast Guard Brandon Di Cardines.
Malang (Indonesia) (AFP) – Flowers and tributes are laid outside Kanjuruhan stadium in Indonesia’s East Java. At least 125 Arema football fans were killed following a stampede at the stadium after the team lost to its longterm rival. Arema FC supporters at the Kanjuruhan stadium stormed the pitch late on Saturday after their team lost 3-2 to the visiting team and bitter rivals, Persebaya Surabaya. Police, who described the unrest as “riots”, said they tried to persuade fans to return to the stands and fired tear gas after two officers were killed. Many of the victims were trampled or choked to death, according to police.
