Lula vows to fight ‘all the way to victory’ as Brazil heads for runoff

Sao Paulo (AFP) – Brazil’s veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who will face far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in the October 30 presidential runoff, vows to continue fighting “until the final victory” after failing to achieve an outright win in the first election round. US Coast Guard conducts search and rescue operations in areas affected by Hurricane Ian

Fort Myers (United States) (AFP) – The US Coast Guard conduct search and rescue efforts, flying over Florida’s coastal areas affected by Hurricane Ian. The death toll has risen to at least 62, officials said Sunday. “For Hurricane Ian it was largely the helicopter operations that were hoisting people out of this harmful hazardous destroyed area that we’ve seen over the last several days, so our job during Ian has been to spot those people, locate those people and then get an asset helicopter on the scene and hoist those people out,” says Lt Commander of Coast Guard Brandon Di Cardines.

Flowers laid outside Indonesian stadium after football stampede

Malang (Indonesia) (AFP) – Flowers and tributes are laid outside Kanjuruhan stadium in Indonesia’s East Java. At least 125 Arema football fans were killed following a stampede at the stadium after the team lost to its longterm rival. Arema FC supporters at the Kanjuruhan stadium stormed the pitch late on Saturday after their team lost 3-2 to the visiting team and bitter rivals, Persebaya Surabaya. Police, who described the unrest as “riots”, said they tried to persuade fans to return to the stands and fired tear gas after two officers were killed. Many of the victims were trampled or choked to death, according to police.

Ukrainian uses hand crank music box to spread ‘happiness’ in war-torn Kharkiv

Kharkiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Viktor gently cranks away at his old music box on the corner of a main road in Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv, sending peaceful music tinkling out onto the city’s war-torn streets in an attempt to bring “happiness” to passers-by. “I’m happy when other people are happy,” says Viktor, as pigeons flock around him, almost moving to the music. “We lack happiness these days, you know?” he adds.
